The D4 Visa is a visa that allows residence in Portugal for more than one year, for those who want to study in higher education (university education) in Portugal.
For whom?
A “student of higher education” is considered to be a third-country national who has been accepted by a higher education institution to attend, as a main activity, a full-time study program leading to the achievement of an academic degree or of a recognized higher education title, namely a diploma, a certificate or a doctorate, which may include a preparation course for such studies or mandatory training within the scope of the study program.
Note: A higher education institution is an institution that grants recognized academic degrees or diplomas of higher education, from the 1st to the 3rd cycles of higher education, regardless of their denomination, or official institution that provides vocational training or higher education.
Requirements
Residence visas are granted to higher education students who, among others, present the following documents:
- Proof of enrollment in a higher education institution; and
- Proof of payment of tuition fees required by the higher education institution, if applicable, to be attested using a declaration from the Educational Institution.
Note: In some cases, proof of payment of tuition fees and proof of enrollment may be waived.
Benefits
- To enter and stay in Portugal and in the other countries that make up the Schengen Area without a visa;
- Family reunification; and
- Access to a residence permit.
At the end of the period of study, the student may apply for a residence permit for one year. During this time he may seek work or create a company in Portugal, compatible with his qualifications.
