Renewal of Residence Permit Renewing a residence permit is a topic that always raises numerous questions regarding costs, timelines, where to apply, among others. In this article, we will clarify these, and other issues related to this topic.
All types of residence permits in Portugal are eligible for renewal, and the renewal process can be conducted either online through the MySEF portal or in person, depending on the applicant’s current situation.
The only exception to the renewal of residence permits pertains to the renewal of Residence Permits for Citizens of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (AR CPLP), as the government has not provided a specific mechanism for this purpose.
However, with the recent approval of the implementation rules of the Migration Action Plan, this issue is partially resolved, ensuring the validity of AR CPLP until June 30, 2025.
Renewal of Residence Card – Online
Online renewal is a practical and efficient option that eliminates the need to present any documents, as it is carried out through the MySEF portal. However, this process is dependent on quarterly openings by AIMA (Agência para a Imigração e Mobilidade), meaning online renewal is possible only if the permit expires within the timeframe during which renewals are open.
For Automatic AIMA Renewal, the residence card holder must have an account on the MySEF portal. When applying online for renewal, instructions for payment of the corresponding administrative fee will be issued.
Renewal of Residence Card – In Person
For in-person renewal of the residence card, the competent authority is the Instituto dos Registos e Notariado (IRN). This method is particularly useful for those who prefer to handle the process personally or have difficulty accessing the MySEF portal.
It’s important to note that in-person renewal of the residence card requires meeting the necessary requirements by presenting the legally required documents for renewal.
When renewal is done in person, IRN sends a message to the applicant with the appointment date.
Renewals of temporary Residence Permits expired for more than six months, as well as renewal of residence cards for EU citizens or their family members, must be done in person at AIMA (Agência para a Imigração e Mobilidade).
To schedule a renewal, interested parties can contact AIMA’s phone helpline or alternatively, fill out the contact form available on AIMA’s website to schedule the renewal.
Appointments for converting temporary residence permits to permanent residence can also be made by phone or through the AIMA website as identified above.
