Government extends air traffic restrictions until April 15

Air Traffic

The Portuguese Government extended air traffic restrictive measures until 15th April. Flights to and from Brazil and the United Kingdom are suspended, and 14-day prophylactic isolation also applies to the land border to high-risk countries.

In a statement, the Ministry of Internal Affairs clarifies that the “obligation to comply with prophylactic isolation of 14 days for those who arrive in Portugal from the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Africa or countries with an incidence rate equal to or greater than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (as is the case of France or Italy)” for travelers who enter national territory by land border.

Flights with origin in Brazil and the United Kingdom remain suspended, except for extraordinary repatriation trips, and also require the presentation of evidence of molecular testing by RT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a negative result, carried out in the 72 hours before boarding, except children who have not completed 24 months of age. They shall also comply, after entry, with a prophylactic isolation period of 14 days, at home or in a place indicated by the health authorities, or wait for the connecting flight to the countries of destination in a specific place in the airport.

Passengers from South Africa who have made a stopover or transited in countries whose air traffic to Portugal is authorized, and who have a passport with registration of departure from the same country in the last 14 days, are also required to submit a negative test and comply with prophylactic isolation.

Passengers arriving in national territory without proof of the negative test will have to carry it out inside the airport at their own expense and will have to wait for the result at the same airport.

Citizens from countries whose incidence rate is 500 cases or more per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days will only be able to make essential travel and must also comply with the prophylactic isolation period. The list of these countries includes Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Slovenia, Estonia, France, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Poland and Sweden.

Only essential travel from countries with an incidence rate of 150 cases and less than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days are allowed, such as Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, the Netherlands, Romania and Switzerland.

The period of prophylactic isolation does not apply to passengers traveling on essential travel and whose period of stay in national territory, attested by the return ticket, does not exceed 48 hours and must limit their travel to the essentials.

Land border

Within the land border with Spain, the movement between Portugal and Spain is limited to the authorized crossing points, and no travel is allowed for tourism purposes.

The citizens or nationals legally resident in Portugal from the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Africa, or countries with an incidence rate of 500 cases or more per 100,000 inhabitants are also required to comply with the prophylactic isolation period of 14 days.
