The European Parliament (EP) has approved the European Travel Authorization System (ETIAS), which consists of citizens from visa-free countries, who will continue to benefit from this, but will require a travel authorization to enter the Schengen space.
ETIAS is due to enter into force in November 2023 and was approved by 495 votes in favor, 115 against, and 30 abstentions. This system allows prior checks to be carried out to assess whether a person poses a security, irregular migration, or public health risk. The information submitted in each application will be automatically verified in the European Union (EU) and Interpol databases to determine if there are grounds for travel authorization refusal.
The travel authorization will cost seven euros and is valid for three years.
