The Status of Equal Rights and Obligations allows Portuguese citizens resident in Brazil and Brazilian citizens resident in Portugal to enjoy certain rights and to be subject to the same duties as nationals of these two countries.
In Portugal, those who can apply for this statute are citizens of Brazilian nationality, of legal age, with a valid residence permit, and residents.
What are the advantages of the Equal Rights and Obligations Statute?
- It allows the enjoyment, without limitations other than those suffered by the Portuguese, of the right to pursue economic activities, the right to work without quantitative limitation, the right to perform, also without quantitative limitation, obligations in the corporate bodies or any legal persons;
- Access to the Civil Service may be performed functions that are not only predominantly technical, as with other foreigners;
- Active electoral capacity (voting rights) in local authority elections (Residence permit for more than two years);
- Passive electoral capacity (candidate) in local authority elections (Residence permit for more than four years).
Please note that termination of status may occur if:
- Expiry or cancellation of Residence Permit;
- Loss of Brazilian nationality.
