For the third consecutive year, the number of foreigners living in Portugal increased, with 480,300 people having residence permits. This figure includes immigrants (nationals from non-Schengen countries) and resident foreigners (citizens of EU and Schengen countries).
According to the Immigration, Border and Asylum Report (RIFA), 93,154 new residence permits were granted, 51% more than in 2017. That same year, the number of immigrants was 421,711, an increase of 13.9%. % next year.
The largest community of foreigners living in Portugal is Brazil, which in 2018 applied for + 143.7% of residence permit applications compared to 2017. There have also been more applications from Bangladeshi citizens (+165.1 %), Nepal (+ 141.2%), India (+ 127.3%) and Venezuela (+ 83.2%).
