The Consulate General of Portugal in Luanda has announced a new requirement for visa applications at the VFS Global center: facial recognition will now be mandatory for scheduling visas. The measure aims to combat fraud, prevent undue blocking of places and make the scheduling process more transparent and accessible to all.
Why was facial recognition implemented?
The Portuguese government admitted in February 2025 that the VFS Global platform in Luanda was being fraudulently blocked by individuals using malicious software to monopolize appointment slots. As a result, many legitimate applicants faced difficulties in getting an appointment and, in some cases, were forced to pay intermediaries to get an appointment.
To curb these fraudulent practices, the Portuguese authorities have made facial recognition compulsory for all visa applicants.
What will change with this measure?
- Mandatory facial recognition for all visa applicants over the age of 18.
- Attempts to circumvent the system, such as indicating a false date of birth, will lead to the automatic refusal of the visa.
- The measure aims to put an end to the undue blocking of vacancies, ensuring that only legitimate applicants are able to schedule a visa application.
- The VFS Global platform should become more functional, reducing dependence on intermediaries.
Impact on visa applicants
- Greater security and fairness – The measure guarantees that appointments go to real applicants and not to intermediaries who exploit the system.
- Possible adaptation period – There may be initial difficulties for those unfamiliar with the facial recognition process.
- Stricter rules – Any attempt to provide false data will result in immediate refusal of visa.
- Long-term improvement – Despite possible initial delays, the expectation is that the new system will make scheduling easier in the future.
What should applicants do now?
- Make sure that all personal data is correct before scheduling facial recognition.
- Find out about updated procedures on the VFS Global portal
- Obtain legal support to avoid errors and ensure that all documentation meets the requirements.
