The residence visa can be the perfect opportunity for passive income holders to move to Portugal. As one of the simplest residence visas in terms of requirements, the D7 is the path chosen by many who aspire to live in Portugal.
The D7 residence visa is issued to those who wish to reside in Portugal for periods longer than 1 year.
What are the benefits of the Residence Visa?
The residence visa is valid for a period of 4 months and allows two entries into Portugal. During this period, the visa holder must move to Portugal and attend an appointment at AIMA for biometric data collection, in order to have their residence card issued;
It allows the submission of accompanying visas for close family members at the same time as the main applicant submits the D7 visa application, so that they can immigrate together, with the family bond to be proven at the time of visa submission.
What are the requirements to obtain the D7 Visa?
For the issuance of a residence permit for passive income holders, the following is required:
- The applicant must have passive income of at least €870 per month from rents, interest, royalties, financial investments, among others.
- It is necessary that the passive income is received consistently and regularly.
- Proof of passive income for at least the last 3 months prior to the consular appointment.
In addition to the requirements related to passive income, the D7 visa applicant must also prove financial means through the possession of a certain amount, legally established, in a Portuguese bank account, which allows them to reside in Portugal for a period of no less than 12 months, being:
- 1st adult (applicant): 100% of the current minimum wage (€870) = €10,440/year;
- 2nd or more adults: 50% of the current minimum wage (€435) = €5,220/year;
- Children and young people under 18 years old and adult children in charge: 30% of the current minimum wage (€261) = €3,132/year.
What is the procedure and timeline to obtain the D7 Visa?
The issuance of a residence authorization for passive income holders – known as the D7 Visa – is divided into two phases:
1st Phase – Consulate – Issuance of the Residence Visa
The applicant must submit the residence visa application at the Portuguese Consulate or the Consular Section of the Portuguese Embassy in the country of origin or residence via the E-visa portal or by email (depending on the consulate).
In certain countries, to handle the volume of applications, the Consulate may delegate tasks to VFS Global, a company that receives applications before they are processed by the Consulate.
Once the residence visa application is submitted, the Consulate has 60 days to issue the visa.
When the residence visa is issued, it is time for the applicant to travel to Portugal to apply for the residence authorization.
2nd Phase – AIMA – Issuance of Residence Authorization
In most cases, the residence visa is issued by the Consulate with the date and location of the appointment. If this does not happen, the applicant must schedule the appointment via phone and/or email.
After all documents are submitted, AIMA has 90 days to issue the residence card.
What documents are required to apply for the D7 Visa?
The D7 visa has two distinct phases of document preparation:
1st Phase – Consulate
At the time of the visa application submission, the following documents must be provided, among others:
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal;
- Proof of a Portuguese bank account showing financial means;
- Document proving ownership of passive income;
- Bank statements from the foreign account showing the regularly obtained income.
Fee: €90
2nd Phase – AIMA
At the time of the appointment, the applicant will provide biometric data – photograph, fingerprints, and signature – and submit the necessary documents, including:
- Residence Authorization Request
- Proof of legal entry into Portugal
- Tax Identification Number (NIF)
- Proof of accommodation
- Proof of financial means.
Fee: €170.08
What is the validity of the Residence Card?
This residence authorization is valid for 2 years from the date of issuance of the residence card and is renewable for successive 3-year periods. After 5 years, the foreign citizen can apply for permanent residence and Portuguese nationality.
Benefits of the D7 Residence Visa
- Family reunification;
- Access to a qualified and accessible healthcare system;

I have a bank account with significant savings. Can I apply for a D7 visa?
