The D2 Residence Visa is for those who wish to engage in self-employment activities in Portugal and reside here for more than one year.

The Residence Visa is valid for a period of 4 months and allows two entries into Portugal. During this period, the visa holder must move to Portugal and schedule an appointment at AIMA to collect their biometric data in order to receive their residence card;

It allows the submission of visas for accompanying family members at the same time as the D2 visa application by the main applicant, so they can immigrate simultaneously with the primary applicant, provided that the family bond is proven when submitting the visa application.

What are the requirements to obtain the D2 Visa in Portugal?

To apply for the D2 residence visa as a self-employed worker, the applicant must meet certain requirements, including:

  • Having a partnership contract or a written proposal for a service contract in liberal professions, or registering the activity with the Portuguese tax authority;
  • If applicable, a declaration issued by the competent authority stating that the applicant is qualified to perform the activity in Portugal;
  • Proving sufficient means of subsistence to reside in Portugal.

What is the procedure and timeframe?

The granting of a residence permit for self-employed workers – known as the D2 Visa – is divided into two phases:

Phase 1 – Consulate – Issuance of the residence visa

The applicant must submit their residence visa application to the Portuguese Consulate or the Consular Section of the Portuguese Embassy in the country of origin or the country where the applicant resides, either by email or through the E-visa portal (depending on the consulate in question).

Note that in some countries, in order to handle the volume of applications, the Consulate may delegate responsibilities to VFS Global, a company that receives the applications before they are processed by the Consulate.

After the residence visa application is submitted, the Consulate has 60 days to issue the visa.

Once the residence visa is issued, the applicant can travel to Portugal to apply for the residence permit.

Phase 2 – AIMA – Issuance of Residence Permit

In most cases, the residence visa is issued by the Consulate with the date and location of the appointment. If this does not happen, the appointment must be requested by phone.

After all documents are submitted, AIMA has a 90-day period to issue the residence card.
