Almost 50,000 new companies, the second highest number ever since there was registration, combined with fewer companies closing their doors and a reduction in insolvency proceedings
During 2022, 48,404 new companies were incorporated, according to the analysis of the Informa B&D Barometer (Informa DB: Tendency Analysis). These figures also reveal that, on the one hand, there was a 14% growth compared to 2021 and, on the other, it was the second best year ever in terms of entrepreneurship: in 2019, 49,594 new companies were created.
According to data revealed by the Informa D&B Barometer, 25,518 sole proprietorships were set up; 19 934 private limited companies, 361 public limited companies and 2591 different entities, thus making the global value of 48 404 new organizations.
After calculating and comparing the data for 2022 with the same period, the Informa D&B Barometer reports that the Portuguese business fabric has seen a 26% growth over a period of 7 years (between 2015 and 2022), despite the constraints in 2020 and part of 2021, when different business areas were affected.

Foreclosures and insolvency proceedings
The Informa D&B’s Barometer also lists companies that, for a variety of reasons, have closed their doors. In 2022, 12,988 companies closed down, the lowest number ever since there was a public record of these matters. On the other hand, it is noted that in the last decade (since 2012), the number of closures and/or insolvency proceedings has been decreasing, with the exception of 2020, around 15 thousand companies affected by the effects of the pandemic ended.
In terms of insolvency proceedings, the Informa D&B Barometer reveals that in 2022 1626 cases were opened which, after all, symbolizes a decrease of 17% compared to 2021. of doors in 2022, “against” the 142 35 in 2021 which represents a decrease of 8.8%.

Companies choose the Lisbon Metropolitan Area
The document presented by D&B analyzes several factors, from numbers to locations and in this sense concluded that, in 2022, approximately 40% of new companies were created in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, thus indicating the strong growth of this geographic region in terms of entrepreneurship. The D&B Barometer also points out that the creation of new companies specifically in this area slightly exceeded the 2019 metrics, when 19,598 new business organizations were registered, while in 2022 the number rose to 19,739.
The North region of the country witnessed a growth of only 5% in terms of the creation of new companies, which represents a large distance from the numbers achieved pre-pandemic. In 2022, 14,235 companies were created in the North, 1,500 less than in 2019.
According to the data collected, the D&B Barometer carried out a territorial analysis in which it should be noted that the trend towards the creation of limited liability companies, anonymous, sole proprietorship or others, headquartered in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon has been, since 2015, above the North Region .
