This is for anyone who entered Portugal as a tourist but wishes to take up residence after finding a job.
To obtain this residence permit, the worker must, among other things, have signed an employment contract with a company based in Portugal.
Step 1 – Expression of Interest
After entering Portugal as a tourist and having signed an employment contract with a company based in Portugal, the interested party can submit their Expression of Interest to the Aliens and Borders Service (SEF).
Step 2 – Application for a residence permit
Once the application has been approved by SEF, the Applicant can go to one of the SEF offices and have an interview there to collect biometric data (photograph, fingerprints and signature).
Step 3 – Receiving the residence card
After the interview, the residence card will be sent to the applicant’s address in Portugal.
Note: the estimated time to complete the process is 2-3 years, during which the applicant will not be able to travel abroad.
The residence card is valid for 2 years. At the end of these 2 years, you can renew it for a further 3 years. At the end of the 5 years, you can choose to apply for a permanent residence permit or Portuguese nationality.
