Reunification is aimed at family members who are third-country nationals of Portuguese citizens or CRUE holders.
Eligible family members are:
Children under the age of 21 or incapacitated (natural or adopted) who are dependent on the couple or one of the spouses or de facto partners;
First-degree relatives in the ascending line of the resident or their spouse over the age of 65, or under the age of 65, provided they are dependent on them.
The application for a residence permit always requires proof of family ties.
Step 1 – Entering Portugal
If the family member to be reunited needs a visa to enter Portugal, they must apply for a short-stay Schengen visa at the Portuguese Consulate in the country of residence (or at a foreign Consulate representing Portugal in that country).
Step 2 – Apply for a residence permit
After entering Portugal, the family member to be reunited will have to attend an appointment with AIMA (Agency for Migration Integration and Asylum) to submit the necessary documentation and collect biometric data (photograph, fingerprints and signature).
Step 3 – Receiving the residence card
After the appointment, the residence card will be sent to the family member’s registered address in Portugal.
The residence card is issued for the duration of the European family member’s residence document on the date of the appointment and can be renewed. After 5 years, you can choose to apply for a permanent residence permit or Portuguese citizenship.
