This type of D2 residence visa is aimed at entrepreneurs who want to create a startup in Portugal, which may already exist in their country of origin.
The program can cover a maximum of 5 entrepreneurs (per project).
The Startup must, among other requirements, be innovative, have the potential to grow internationally, create qualified jobs and achieve a turnover or asset value of more than € 325,000.00/year within five years.
Note: the project must be accepted by a certified incubator and approved by IAPMEI, but the company only has to be established and operational at the end of the incubation contract (5 years).
Step 1 – Approval by IAPMEI
After formalizing interest in a certified incubator, the application can be submitted for pre-approval by IAPMEI. After pre-approval, the contract with the incubator can be signed and the application is resubmitted to IAPMEI for final approval.
Step 2 – Applying for a visa
The residence visa must be applied for at the Portuguese Consulate in the country of residence.
The visa issued entitles the holder to 2 entries into Portugal and is valid for 120 days, during which time the holder must travel to Portugal.
Step 3 – Applying for a residence permit
After entering Portugal, the applicant will have to attend an appointment with AIMA (Agency for Migration Integration and Asylum) to provide updated information and collect biometric data (photograph, fingerprints and signature).
Step 4 – Receiving the residence card
After the appointment, the residence card will be sent to the applicant’s registered address in Portugal.
The residence card is valid for 2 years. At the end of these 2 years, it can be renewed for a further 3 years. At the end of the 5 years, you can choose to apply for a permanent residence permit or Portuguese nationality.
