Immigration

Golden Visas

For whom it is intended:

It is aimed at foreign citizens who wish to invest in Portugal and, through this investment, obtain a residence permit, as well as their close family members.

Requirements:

To obtain a Golden Visa, the investor must, among other requirements, prove that he or she has made one of the following investments:

Capital Transfer

  • In an amount equal to or greater than € 500,000 applied to the acquisition of shares in non-real estate collective investment undertakings (Investment Funds), with a maturity of at least five years on the date of the investment and with at least 60% of the value of the investments realised in commercial companies based in Portugal.

Job creation

  • Creation of at least 10 jobs (the number may be reduced to 8 in low-density areas);
  • In an amount equal to or greater than € 500,000 applied to the incorporation of a commercial company with its registered office in Portugal, combined with the creation of five permanent jobs;
  • In an amount equal to or greater than € 500,000 or more applied to increase the share capital of a commercial company with its registered office in Portugal, combined with the creation of five permanent jobs for a minimum period of three years;
  • An amount equal to or greater than € 500,000 applied to increase the share capital of a commercial company with its registered office in Portugal, combined with the maintenance of 10 jobs (with a minimum of 5 permanent jobs), for a minimum period of three years.

Support for the Arts and Research

  • In an amount equal to or greater than € 250,000 applied to (previously approved) artistic production projects or the recovery and maintenance of Portuguese cultural heritage (the investment amount may be reduced to € 200,000 in low-density territories);
  • In an amount equal to or greater than € 500,000 applied to scientific research activities managed by accredited organisations (the investment amount may be reduced to € 400,000 in low-density territories);

Note: the term “low-density territory” refers to places on a list published by the government with fewer than 100 inhabitants per square kilometre or with a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of less than 75 % of the national average.

Process:

Step 1 – Investment and application submission

Once the investment has been made, the application can be submitted, subject to pre-approval by AIMA (Agency for Migration Integration and Asylum).

Step 2 – Application for a residence permit

Once the application has been pre-approved and there are places available, the applicant and their family must attend an appointment with AIMA (Agency for the Integration of Migration and Asylum) to provide updated information and to collect biometric data (photograph, fingerprints and signature).

Step 3 – Approval of the residence permit application

AIMA (Agency for Migration Integration and Asylum) will then carry out a detailed analysis of the residence permit application and, if it is approved, will request payment of the relevant fees.

Step 4 – Receipt of the residence card

Once the fees have been paid, the residence card will be sent to the applicant’s registered address in Portugal.

The residence card is valid for 2 years. At the end of these 2 years, it can be renewed every 2 years, at which point the investments will be assessed in terms of their impact on scientific and cultural activity and the promotion of foreign direct investment and job creation.

After 5 years, you can choose to apply for a permanent residence permit and/or Portuguese nationality.

Note: the investment must be maintained for a minimum of 5 years and the minimum periods of stay in Portugal, counted from the date of issue of the residence card, must be respected:

  • 7 days, consecutive or interpolated, in the 1st year;
  • and 14 days, consecutive or interpolated, in the following two-year periods.
