Foreign citizens residing in Portugal have the opportunity to acquire Portuguese citizenship by naturalising.
The best known process is naturalisation after five years of legal residence, but there is also a possibility for those whose residence is not legal.
The matter is complex and each case must be analysed individually to find the best way forward.
Those who naturalise as Portuguese may then pass on Portuguese citizenship to their spouses or common-law partners and to their children who are minors or born after obtaining citizenship.
