Grandchild

For whom it is intended:

The grandchild of a Portuguese citizen is entitled to Portuguese citizenship if:

the grandparent is originally Portuguese and
have effective ties to the Portuguese community (which, nowadays, is just showing proficiency in the Portuguese language)

The grandchild obtains original citizenship and can also pass on Portuguese citizenship to its family without limitation, i.e. to its spouse, children and grandchildren.

Requirements:

Grandparent to be Portuguese origin

Membership is established under Portuguese law.
No conviction for an offence punishable by a maximum prison sentence of 3 years or more under Portuguese law.
Possess adequate proficiency in the Portuguese language
Compile, among others, the following documents:
- Identification document
- Birth certificate of grandchild and child
- Portuguese birth certificate of the Portuguese grandparent
- Test of adequate proficiency in the Portuguese language
- Criminal record of the country of birth and citizenship and of all countries where the applicant has resided after 16 years of age
Any of the following may occur beforehand:
- To locate the Portuguese birth certificate in Portugal – we can help.
- Marriage transcription of the Portuguese parent to Portugal if said marriage took place abroad.

We will analyse and compare the birth certificates of the three generations (grandchild, its parent and the Portuguese grandparents) to confirm the establishment of filiation, taking the opportunity to detect any inconsistencies in the documents that may hinder the process.

Process:

Framing the entitlement and determining the best strategy for the client and their family.
Guidance on the issue and legalisation of foreign documents by the client.
Submission of the file to the competent registry/court/sector in Portugal and regular monitoring of progress.
Sending the final document to the client – be it the judgement, the civil registration certificate (birth, marriage, death), etc.

* In the citizenship process the client receives a certificate of the Portuguese birth certificate and has the obligation to request the issuance of the ->Citizen Card-> and in possession of the latter, if desired, it can also request the issuance of the ->Portuguese Passport->. Both documents can be issued at the Portuguese Embassy and/or Consulate or directly in Portugal. Ask us how.
