For whom it is intended:

An individual who was born before independence from a former colony, even if they are descended from citizens of a former colony, is very likely to have a parent or grandparent who has or had Portuguese citizenship.

Sometimes it is necessary to first regularise the situation of the parent or grandparent in order to be entitled to Portuguese Citizenship.

There are several different hypotheses, we list three below:

If the applicant has a parent who retained original Portuguese citizenship after Independence or who acquired original Portuguese citizenship (by being the child or grandchild of a Portuguese national).

The applicant can also acquire original Portuguese citizenship by being the child of a Portuguese national.

If the applicant has a grandparent who retained their original citizenship or if the applicant has a grandparent who was born and died before independence and therefore never lost their citizenship.

The applicant can also acquire original citizenship because the latter is the grandchild of a Portuguese national.

If the applicant has a parent who acquired derived citizenship by naturalisation or acquisition (either by length of residence in Portugal, or because the parent was born in a former colony and could not retain it, or by marriage/common-law marriage, etc.) and the applicant is a minor or incapacitated person

The applicant can also acquire citizenship because the latter is the minor or incapacitated child of a Portuguese national.

Requirements:

Was born outside a former colony – Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde or São Tomé and Príncipe.
Was born before the independence of that country (between 1974 and 1975).
The remainder depend on the type of Process that can be followed.

We will analyse and compare the documents to determine the most suitable process and compliance with the requirements, taking the opportunity to detect any inconsistencies in the documents that may be hindering the process.

Process:

Framing the entitlement and determining the best strategy for the client and their family.
Guidance on the issue and legalisation of foreign documents by the client.
Submission of the file to the competent registry/court/sector in Portugal and regular monitoring of progress.
Sending the final document to the client – be it the judgement, the civil registration certificate (birth, marriage, death), etc.

* In the citizenship process the client receives a certificate of the Portuguese birth certificate and has the obligation to request the issuance of the ->Citizen Card-> and in possession of the latter, if desired, it can also request the issuance of the ->Portuguese Passport->. Both documents can be issued at the Portuguese Embassy and/or Consulate or directly in Portugal. Ask us how.
