Overseas (Africa)

Citizens who were born in the so-called Overseas Provinces or Former Colonies in Africa – Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe – can acquire or re-acquire Portuguese Citizenship.

Depending on when and where they were born, different laws may apply to their situation and so they may have to fulfil different requirements, documents and procedures.

Some citizens only need to transcribe their birth records abroad in Portugal, as they have retained their Portuguese nationality; others really need to acquire Portuguese nationality.

For example, the procedures are different depending on whether the applicant was born before or after independence.

Citizenship is never immediate. It is necessary to analyse the specific case very carefully and analyse the reports and documents available to understand whether the person concerned meets the requirements and has all the necessary documents.
