In addition to the ways of acquiring citizenship by origin (children and grandchildren of Portuguese nationals or some born in Portugal) and those who can acquire citizenship by acquisition (adopted persons, spouses or common-law marriages and minor or incapacitated children of foreigners who acquired citizenship by derivation), there is also the possibility for foreign citizens to naturalise as Portuguese nationals.
The grounds justifying the naturalisation of a foreign national are diverse and are listed in Article 6 of the Citizenship Law.
Those who naturalise as Portuguese may then pass on Portuguese citizenship to their spouses or common-law partners and to their children who are minors or born after obtaining citizenship.
