Sephardic Jews are those originally from Portugal and Spain who, in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, were forced to practice their faith in secret (Crypto-Jews), forcibly converted to Catholicism (the so-called New Christians, Marranos, or Anusim), and still forced into exile.
Those who can prove to be descendants of Sephardic Jews may apply for Portuguese nationality, as well as their spouses or de facto partners and their minor children or those born after obtaining nationality.
