Foreigners born in Portugal, children of foreigners who are not in the service of the respective State, and who do not declare that they do not want to be Portuguese, provided that, at the time of birth, one of the parents is legally resident in Portuguese territory, or that, regardless of being legal, has been resident for at least one year.
Once the conditions above have been met, a person obtains original nationality and can also transmit Portuguese nationality to his or her family without limitations, i.e. to his or her spouse, children and grandchildren.
