Born in Portugal

For whom it is intended:

Foreigners born in Portugal, children of foreigners who are not in the service of the respective State, and who do not declare that they do not want to be Portuguese, provided that, at the time of birth, one of the parents is legally resident in Portuguese territory, or that, regardless of being legal, has been resident for at least one year.

Once the conditions above have been met, a person obtains original nationality and can also transmit Portuguese nationality to his or her family without limitations, i.e. to his or her spouse, children and grandchildren.

* Note: Those who were born in Portugal after 198,1 but did not have a parent with legal residence at the time of birth or illegal for more than one year, may have different routes to Portuguese citizenship by naturalisation. Contact us to find out more.

Requirements:

Born in Portugal
One of the parents
- legally resident in Portugal at the time of birth
- or has been resident for one year at the date of birth even if the residence is not legal; and
- is not in the service of the respective State
Compile, among others, the following documents:
- Identification document
- Birth certificate
- Portuguese birth certificate
- Proof of residence of parents in Portugal at the time of birth
Any of the following may occur beforehand
- Locate the birth certificate in Portugal – we can help.
- Issue the SEF certificate concerning the residence of the parent and the fact that it is not in the service of the respective State.

We will analyse and compare birth certificates and proof of residence documents, taking the opportunity to detect any inconsistencies in the documents that may impede the process.

Process:

Framing the right and determining the best strategy for the client and their family.
Guidance on the issue and legalisation of foreign documents by the client.
Submission of the file to the competent registry/court/sector in Portugal and regular monitoring of progress.
Sending the final document to the client – be it the judgement, the civil registration certificate (birth, marriage, death), etc.

* In the citizenship process the client receives a certificate of the Portuguese birth certificate and has the obligation to request the issuance of the “Citizen Card” and in possession of the latter, if desired, it can also request the issuance of the “Portuguese Passport”. Both documents can be issued at the Portuguese Embassy and/or Consulate or directly in Portugal. Ask us how.
