Portuguese Citizenship

Timor

For whom it is intended:

Citizens born in Timor-Leste until the date of independence, 20 May 2002.

  • If born before 8 October 1981 – the entry into force of the current Citizenship Law, regardless of whether they are children of foreigners or Portuguese – except the children of invading military personnel or Indonesian officials born in Timor at the time of the occupation.
  • If born after 8 October 1981 – entry into force of the current Citizenship Law, provided with a Portuguese parent.

Citizenship is original and can also be passed on to your family without limitation, i.e. your spouse, children and grandchildren.

Requirements:

  • Was born in Timor up to and including 19 May 2002
  • If born after 8 October 1981 have a Portuguese parent
  • The transcription of the birth is requested by the person or by a legitimate interested party – spouse and descendants.
  • Compile, among others, the following documents:
    • Identification document
    • Birth certificate
    • Portuguese birth certificate
    • Other documents of the time (if necessary will be requested)
  • Any of the following may occur beforehand
    • To locate the Portuguese birth certificate in Portugal – we can help.
    • Marriage transcription to Portugal if the marriage took place abroad.

In principle it should be a very simple process to transcribe the birth certificate, but due to the war many civil registry archives were destroyed and this requires confirmation of the documents presented. In some cases the baptism register is accepted, and in others the new civil registration certificates processed after independence.

Process:

  1. Framing the entitlement and determining the best strategy for the client and their family.
  2. Guidance on the issue and legalisation of foreign documents by the client.
  3. Submission of the file to the competent registry/court/sector in Portugal and regular monitoring of progress.
  4. Sending the final document to the client – be it the judgement, the civil registration certificate (birth, marriage, death), etc.

* In the citizenship process the client receives a certificate of the Portuguese birth certificate and has the obligation to request the issuance of the ->Citizen Card-> and in possession of the latter, if desired, it can also request the issuance of the ->Portuguese Passport->. Both documents can be issued at the Portuguese Embassy and/or Consulate or directly in Portugal. Ask us how.
