Portuguese Citizenship

Macao

For whom it is intended:

Citizens who were born in Macao until the end of 1999, since Macao was a Portuguese territory until 25 April 1976 and then a territory under Portuguese administration until 20 December 1999, when it was integrated into China.

  • If born before 21 November 1981 – the entry into force of the Citizenship Law in 1981, everyone is Portuguese, regardless of whether they are children of foreigners or Portuguese.
  • If born after 21 November 1981 – entry into force of the current Citizenship Law, only if they have a Portuguese parent.

Citizenship is original in both cases and can also be passed on to your family without limitation, i.e. your spouse, children and grandchildren.

Although China does not allow dual citizenship, which is why many individuals born in Macao and their descendants have chosen not to pursue it, many have Portuguese citizenship or the right to it and can pass it on to their descendants.

Requirements:

  • Was born in Macao by 19 December 1999.
  • The transcription of the birth is requested by the person or by a legitimate interested party – spouse and descendants.
  • Compile, among others, the following documents:
    • Identification document
    • Birth certificate
    • Portuguese birth certificate
    • Other documents of the time (if necessary will be requested)
  • Any of the following may occur beforehand
    • To locate the Portuguese birth certificate in Portugal – we can help.
    • Marriage transcription to Portugal if the marriage took place abroad.

Many citizens who were born in the region, for example in Hong Kong, and were registered at the Portuguese Consulate, are also Portuguese and in many cases also need to transcribe their birth records.

We will analyse and compare the documents to determine the most suitable process and compliance with the requirements, taking the opportunity to detect any inconsistencies in the documents that may be hindering the process.

Process:

  1. Framing the entitlement and determining the best strategy for the client and their family.
  2. Guidance on the issue and legalisation of foreign documents by the client.
  3. Submission of the file to the competent registry/court/sector in Portugal and regular monitoring of progress.
  4. Sending the final document to the client – be it the judgement, the civil registration certificate (birth, marriage, death), etc.

* In the citizenship process the client receives a certificate of the Portuguese birth certificate and has the obligation to request the issuance of the ->Citizen Card-> and in possession of the latter, if desired, it can also request the issuance of the ->Portuguese Passport->. Both documents can be issued at the Portuguese Embassy and/or Consulate or directly in Portugal. Ask us how.
